pay the writer - Harlan Ellison

Hat tip to  Nicola Morgan  - who writes what must be one of the most informative and enjoyable blogs for writers - for reminding me about this video clip.

You're a writer. Next time somebody asks you to come along and talk to their group, think about what the man is saying.

  1. I've seen so many instances of this just lately, writers under contract, selling their souls for a pittance. I read somewhere early last year that the expectation for a few years from now will be all books online for free and the writers will have to make their pay from personal appearances, ads, readings, signings, video, or whatever.

Love the new blog layout btw. Looking ggoooood.

  2. that's a scary notion, Marley. Particularly when, as the man says, writers are often asked and expected to turn up and work for nothing.

  3. Absolutely bloody brilliant, Michael. This speaks to my poor wounded writer's soul!

  5. Love Harlan Ellison. He can be a jerk, but a darn smart jerk that sticks to his guns.

  6. Maggie - he says it like no one else would.

Thea - each to their own.

Nevets - my thoughts exactly. I wouldn't want to get on his bad side.
